Construction and deconstruction

With sculpture as the undisputed protagonist, following an order that is not only chronological, we should begin with Caja vacía, painted by Jorge Oteiza between 1974 and 1979. This is an authentic manifesto on the metaphysical treatment of sculptural subject matter, on the dematerialization thereof.

The full/empty binomial seems to give rise to Twins V, 1988-89, the work of Txomin Badiola, an outstanding disciple of Oteiza. The use of industrial profiles, of repetition, and the inclusion of colour underscore the post-modern aspect of the time, which is no longer Oteiza's nineteen seventies.

Another equally important product from this historical point in time is Nothing to be scared of. They are crazy about each other (Lightly bracing), 2018, by Itziar Barrio. A sculpture that deconstructs one of IKEA´s cheapest chairs and transforms it into a non-functional device brimming with ambivalent resonances.

Finally, El fluir de lo fijado, 2021, by Antonio Fernández Alvira, tightens (quite literally) the relationship between architecture and the body, between decorative elements and artistic objects. Fragmentation and deformation come together to establish new relationships with the surrounding environment and the viewer´s new interpretations.
