Subject matter and words as poetic materials

In the early 20th century, collage was a fundamental element in eliminating the root causes of the distance between reality and works of art. Fragments of reality became a substantial part of works. This shift from representation to presentation really was a huge step, and is still visible today. Moreover, words and images have never ceased to branch out from the common trunk of their poetic dimension.

In the Grand roi à cheval, by Antoni Clavé, a work from 1957, the fabric of a glued curtain is the basic material used to create the king in a Spanish deck of cards with great expressive power. No less intense is Homenatge a Salvat-Papasseit by Josep Guinovart, 1963, in which wood, rags and even a bicycle wheel coexist through the integration of the colours. A kind of little window and the letters of the name serve as a backdrop.

Alongside them, Disegno per un camino, 2018, a work by Elena Alonso, is a sculptural installation of rigourous symmetry and delicate poetic charge that invites you to walk through the vivified whiteness of the wall using your imagination. Cristina Mejías's work Se apagaron los faroles, se encendieron los grillos, 2021, is basically a visual poem composed with different type of wood, inspired by the poetry of Federico García Lorca. Duality is present in every element of this exquisite composition.
