A very brief explanation before taking a tour of this exhibition: “abstraction” is not the opposite of “figuration”. While the main operational strategy of figurative art is imitation, abstract art relies on identifying that which is regarded as essential: subject matter, colours, shapes, gestures.
While the Fundación Juan March collection on display at the Museu Fundación Juan March in Palma is a magnificent example of the tensions of the abstraction/figuration binomial, this exhibition delves into the age-old dialectic game between the two, providing updates that took place in the first two decades of this century.
